the state of humanity.

something that really gets to me are those people in society who struggle to survive due to being underprivileged, particularly the homeless. when i pass a grubby, scruffy homeless person in the street sitting against a cold building or making poor attempts to busk as people just casually walk on by without even batting an eye, i am overcome by sadness regarding the state of humanity and the lack of compassion some people have. in saying this, i'm not expecting everyone to break out in tears and empty their wallets, but for example the other day while strolling through the city with a friend i was asked by an elderly, homeless man if i had a few dollars to spare so he could purchase a bus ticket. without hesitation i reached into my purse and dropped a few dollars into his hand while my friend looked on in disgust (at the man, not at me). i'm not the wealthiest person to be throwing money away to every tom, dick and harry, but i definitely know i am more advantaged than these unfortunate people and feel a strong sense to help, even in a small way. as we carried on, my friend says to me, "he'll probably use that to put towards some cigarettes or booze, you know" my response was, "all the power to him if he does, if i was living a life in the slums like him i'd probably put the money towards something that would temporarily cheer me up too". futhermore, i don't think it's fair to make assumptions that every homeless person is a substance abusing bum, some people just get dealt the wrong cards in life.
perhaps i'm too sensitive to such issues?

  1. You have such a pretty blog:)

I am in Adelaide and I feel tremendous sadness walking around town and seeing people living on the street. For a long time I did not understand how and why this could happen in our society, anyone can get a basic payment from the government and cheap housing.Somewhere.

However over the years I have learnt that some people do choose this lifestyle, due to illness. Many can not live within the confines of 4 walls or can kick a lifelong addiction.

There are many great organisations around who do help after dark when people are not out at work or shopping. Especially around the squares there are people handing out meals or condoms to those that are working. I think those that really want to help should get behind those that are organised. Strength in numbers:)

It is fantastic you have a sensitive heart, most people lose it out of fear and self protection.
